Inspired by the car noises post on the FP, here is a small collection of 2-stroke engines doing what they do best: making a lot of racket.

^ normal Kei car maneuvering.

And for good measure, a single cylinder 2-stroke tractor:

What next, boxer engines or rotaries?

Holy Mother of God - did you see the low end torque on that 2-stroke tractor? What”?

As for the rest of them, they sounded like the 50cc Puch we had in Chicago when I was growing up. (Got it from Sears - a serious machine that Puch.)

If anyone posts “the most annoying thing” I think I’ll go postal, or drink heavily. One of the two.

10 liters - one cylinder. That is a whole lot of combustion going on. A few hundred torque foots at less than 800rpm.

That reminds me of the few shops I’ve seen with line shaft power systems. They usually had a single motor, electric or diesel, that powered the shop system. A long throw, big bore monster, when fuel driven. A 3 phase motor with 2 legs on the grid and a third on a secondary motor (with a pull off the windings) for an electric setup.

I’m impressed they could do that with 2 cycle, since after my childhood, I only saw 2 cycles as high rpm machines to get anything done.

I think the steep power curve is a result of trying to wring out as much power as possible from a given displacment. More conservatively tuned engines have a flatter power curve. My old Subaru 360 did not feel “peaky” at all, but it only gave 25hp from 356cc, which in 2-stroke terms is nothing. When the engine is specifically made for low RPM work things like piston fins can be used too to increase low speed power. I think only the oldest Lanz tractors had a finned piston, but many other large 2-strokes used them.

I got behind a guy on a 125cc 2-stroke at a track day this weekend. Thing was making all kinds of racket and smoke and generally sounding angry. It didn’t go very fast on the straight, but it could haul around corners and out brake everything.
